I was listening to the radio on the way into work this morning, my usual station which offers classic rock and a morning crew of two DJ's and their cohorts.
They had a couple of tickets to see Rush (classic rock band) so they decided to play a game called "Mothers Underwear". People can call in and guess the type of underwear they think their mothers are wearing. The DJ's then call the mother and if the caller is correct, they win the tickets. Yes, a little erie, but I decided to go with it and remind myself this was supposed to be funny.
This guy calls in and offers up his best guess on what his mother was wearing. He said "briefs, probably blue". His mother was 84 years old and lived on the west coast. It was around 6am her time. Nevertheless, they called the mother up and a sweet sounding lady answered the phone. Boy was she game! Once she figured out what they were doing, they were shying away from HER!
Come to find out, Mother was wearing only her nightgown! You go Mom!!
They ended up giving the caller tickets regardless.
Live life to the fullest and enjoy your weekend!

Blood Pressure Monitors Explained
Have you ever come across those blood pressure monitors in the store and had your arm squeezed for free? Some people need to take their blood pressure on a regular basis and need a home unit. There are many types of blood pressure monitors, so here is a guide to help you decide which one is best for you:
* Wrist Monitor - Worn on the wrist and automatically inflates, providing readings on the LED display. The size makes it great for travel.
* Manual Inflation Home Monitor - Also known as semi-automatic, these monitors require self pumping of the bulb and provide readings on an LED display. Economical and efficient.
* Automatic Inflation Home Monitor - These monitors inflate with the touch of a button and provide readings on an LED display. Available in basic models to advanced, depending on how many readings you need to take and record, along with other information such as heart rate.
* Physician Grade Manual Monitor - Inflation requires pumping of the bulb and readings are shown on a manometer. Available in basic and in a kit with a stethoscope to read heart rates.
All monitors should include an arm cuff. Larger cuffs are available for purchase seperately. Each type of monitor is available with different options.
Now that you have your readings, what do they mean? According to the Mayo Clinic, here is a general guideline. Of course always consult your doctor for accurate result interpretation and consultation.
Top Number - Bottom Number - Category
Below 120 - Below 80 - Normal Blood Pressure
120-139 - 80-89 - Prehypertension
140-159 - 90-99 - Stage 1 Hypertension
160 or more - 100 or more - Stage 2 Hypertension
To get an accurate reading, you should take your blood pressure twice while sitting down.

Are you Hot?
I am hearing through the news and also from friends disbursed throughout the country that a very hot, sticky and miserable heatwave is gripping most of the US.
Funny thing is, I have actually been CHILLY the past couple of days here in Colorado. This is why I love this state! Every season we get a nice repreve from the typical seasonal weather. It was literally in the 60's this week! Our trip to the mountains over the fourth of July weekend netted us a few mornings of 30 degree weather - I could see my breath!
Every winter, we can pretty much count on a few days of 50-60 degree weather right smack in the middle of January or February. Its as if the carefree, be-who-I-want-to-be attitude in Boulder has rubbed off on Mother Nature. (For those of you unfamiliar with Boulder, CO, it is the granola eating, Subaru driving, recycling, organic, hemp and hippie capital of our nation - there is always something that makes you cock your head to the side and go "huh")

Stethoscopes - Hear the Scoop
John is a nursing student and came to Mountain View Medical Supply needing a new stethoscope. Since this was his first purchase, he had a lot of questions!

Most stethoscopes are binaural, which means it is designed to work in both ears.
The chestpiece is typically dual headed - the diaphram captures sounds from the body and the bellshape captures lower frequency sounds. Chestpieces come in many shapes, and types to fit different needs, from cardiology to pediatrics, to basic monitoring.
Most stethoscopes now have self sealing ear tips to ensure background noise is eliminated.
The length of the tubing can vary - giving added distance from the patient, but it can also interfere with sound quality.
To chose the right stethoscope for you, determine your needs and preferences and set a reasonable budget. Different manufacturer's offer comparible products at very different price levels. Do some consumer review research to ensure you get your money's worth!

Freedom, the 4th of July and America
I am an American. I was born and raised in the great state of Colorado and I love my freedom! I love that every American citizen can vote and I love that the American Dream is mine for the taking!
If you havent seen the movie Primary Colors, starring John Travolta, you should rent it this weekend. The movie is based on an explosive book written anonymously, supposidly about Bill Clinton and his presidential campaign. Love him or hate him, you walk away knowing that deep in his heart, he has a true love for America and the American people.
Other countries call American's arrogant. I think that is a true statement. Personally, I dont think there is a better country than America, and I do feel kind of sorry for anyone that does not live here.
I have a (possibly unhealthy) fascination with King Henry VIII and that whole era. He led a little too much with his heart which created quite a mess between "church and state". He alone seemed to enjoy freedom while his people suffered at the hand of his romantic whims and somewhat undecided religious views. I can only imagine how that scenario would play out in modern America!
I also have a (possibly unhealthy) fascination with Elvis. He served in the military, enjoyed great success in the career he dreamed about having, had a mama who cooked wonderful American meals, and got married and divorced. You dont get more American than that, folks.
Enjoy your holiday weekend, spend time with those you care about and eat good food!
Happy 4th of July, everyone!

Doctor's, Nurse's & Healthcare Reform
The goal of our new health care bill is to expand coverage to more people, reduce costs and improve quality of care.
Those are goals that most everyone agrees upon. Of course how we go about achieving those goals has created some rather heated arguments.
Even if we can find a way to cover most Americans for less cost and with higher quality, I have to ask: Who is going to provide our healthcare under the new reform bill?
It is well known that Baby Boomers are now retiring by the millions. Nearly 40% of doctors are 55 or older and they are potentially part of that retirement boom.
About one third of the nursing workforce is 50 years or older, and 55% of those nurses expressed an interest in retiring in the next 10 years.
The number of medical doctors and nurses coming out of school are not enough to replace the number leaving the profession.
There are incentives in the healthcare reform for newly graduated doctors, however there aren't enough residency positions to train and replace the doctors leaving the workforce.
Couple the medical professional shortage with lower reimbursement rates for care, and you have even more doctors walking away from their practices because they can no longer afford to run their businesses. Sometimes we forget that doctors are also business men and women.
Docs4PatientCare, an organization of concerned physicians, claim that what they charge and what they actually get paid are two very different amounts. Reimbursements are based on Medicare, and providers lose money on Medicaid and Medicare in many cases. Basically, reimbursements have been decreasing and patient volumes are increasing, which means more work for less money each year.
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 75% of nurses said they think the shortage “presents a major problem for the quality of their work life, the quality of patient care, and the amount of time that nurses can spend with patients.”
Would you work harder in a less desirable environment for less money? Again, I ask: Who is going to provide our healthcare?

Wheelchairs - The Short & Sweet
June, a simply wonderful woman, came into our store looking for a new wheelchair. It was her first purchase, and her first experience with wheelchairs and she needed the "low-down" on what was available.
So, we decided to share this wisdom with everyone else!
There are basically three kinds of wheelchairs:
Power Wheelchairs - A wheelchair with a motor so the user can navigate on their own without being pushed by a caregiver.

Dual Axel Wheelchairs - A wheelchair with a large back wheel that has an attached handrim so the user can propel themselves.

Transport Wheelchairs - A wheelchair with 4 smaller wheels, that is designed to only be pushed by a caregiver.
.jpg)
Wheelchairs are typically referred to as 18", 19", 20" or 22". This is a reference to the seat width.
You will also want to consider the type of arms you need. Desk arms are shorter in length and sometimes fold up and out of the way, making it easier to sit at a desk or table.
Weight capacity, foldability, weight of the wheelchair itself and footrest options should all be taken into consideration.
Of course we offer a wide variety of the above mentioned wheelchairs, so take a peek HERE

5 Steps to Sorting Through an Estate
I was out of the office all of last week because the time had finally come to sort through my beloved mother-in-law's estate. Our goal was to sort, pack and empty out the house she had lived in for over 40 years.
All I can say is WOW, there was a lot of stuff, and quite frankly, we didnt not get it done in the 4+ days, and we worked very HARD.
To help others, here are 5 Steps to Sorting Through an Estate:
1) Get LOTS of packing supplies. Boxes of various shapes and sizes - Big enough for artwork, small enough for that cherished nativity set. Get packing paper to wrap delicates and even a roll of bubble wrap. Also, save those towels or linens that you thought about selling or donating, and wrap valuables in them.
2) Get a roll-off dumpster. You can usually get them for a few days or up to a week and they come pick them up when full. Price these out because they vary greatly from company to company. This helps because you can take out trash items as you go along, keeping your space from getting too cluttered - and believe me, it will look like a tornado hit as you go along!
3) Decide whether you want to have an estate sale or donate your items to charity. The estate sale will net you cash, donating will give you a tax deduction. Weigh your estimated net proceeds. Some people find estate sales emotionally difficult because something that is priceless to you, may only go for a couple of dollars. Donating to a good cause can leave you feeling good because you are helping others in need. We called up the Hospice company we used and they will actually come into the house and take out the items we are donating (most wont come into the house, so call around). This is especially helpful for large items such as bedroom furniture. NOTE: Most places will no longer accept mattresses, but we asked around and were glad to find friends that needed a set (they came and picked them up).
4) Clear a room and create designated "drop areas" for items. For instance, if there are two families that will be keeping items, designate an area for each family and as you go through items, simply place "keep items" in that designated place. Designate a place for artwork, a place for glass items, a place for linens, a place for electronics, etc.
5) Tag all large items throughout the house with post-it type notes. Label them "donate", "storage", "trash" or "Sister Sue's - storage". When an entire room has been gone through and cleaned out as much as possible, put a note on the door that the room is "DONE!".
Lastly, be sure to focus on the important stuff. Dont fret over finding a home for every single thing in the house. Make a box of laundry supplies and give that to a neighbor. Make a box of garage items and save it for your son for when he has his first house.
There are ten grandchildren in our family, and my mother-in-law loved Christmas, so we made ten "starter" boxes of Christmas items for each grandchild. When they have a home of their own, they will have a piece of their "Granny" to help celebrate!

Misconceptions About Nurses
I truly admire nurses. I mean, of all professions, I have a healthy respect for them, even more so than doctors. I get that doctors put in a ton more time at school, but you dont see nurses going around correcting people with "It's Nurse Smith, NOT Ms. Smith".
If you have ever been in the hospital, you know that they sometimes become an extended part of your family, even if just for a short period of time. After the slightly difficult birth of my first daughter, I couldnt wait to go show my labor nurse our bundle of joy. She left with a shift change about an hour before the birth, so I wanted her to see the fruit of HER labor!
One of the common misconceptions about nurses is that if they dont work in a hospital, they have "left" the profession of nursing. Only real nurses work in hospitals. I'm here to tell you that nurses show up in the most surprising places! Last year I spent a good part of 6 weeks at a cancer center with a family member receiving chemotherapy. I assumed the people helping us would be technicians. They turned out to be real live oncology nurses! These nurses made a difficult time in our lives relatively bearable. One of the ladies was a traveling nurse who followed her husband around the country with his job. Another nurse was putting his oldest son through college and then he was about ready to retire. And the one nurse who always waited for us to come in so she could grab our chart and be the one to help us for the day, was a single mom raising a son. I have no idea how many children my doctor has, or what he plans to do when he retires.
Another misconception is that one of a nurse's main job responsibilities is to help doctors do their jobs better. The fact of the matter is that nurses are highly educated and make critical decisions in the care of their patient's every day. In fact there is a strong movement in America towards practicing nurses to help fill the gap of shortage with doctors. I am happy to see a practicing nurse when my children are ill or have a rash, or have some mystery pain in their abdomen.
As a patient, a sense of empathy and compassion is as important as the quality of care. A nursing instructor once explained to new grads, "Patients dont care how much you know until they know how much you care."

Summer Reads
I like to read and wish that I had more time for this favorite past time. In fact, I have a "to read" pile of books that is currently three-high.
So for those of you who would like to add to your pile, or are out of books to read, here is a short list of highly acclaimed Summer Reads:
LET THE GREAT WORLD SPIN, by Colum McCann
This novel, with its web of disparate but connected characters, is an act of bravado, dizzying proof that to keep your balance you need to know how to fall.
THE HELP, by Kathryn Stockett
Three ordinary women are about to take extraordinary steps in 1962 Mississippi. With pitch-perfect voices, you are transported back in time where a movement by these women changes their town forever.
YES, MY DARLING DAUGHTER, by Margaret LeRoy
Four year old Sylvie longs to return to a house she has never seen and a family she cannot have known.
COLUMBINE, by Dave Cullen
A Gripping account of the Colorado school shooting, this chilling narrative is too vital to miss, as are his myth-busting revelations.
THE FOOD OF A YOUNGER LAND, by Mark Kurlansky
Stories and recipes collected in the 1930's of what and how American's ate. Indiana Persimmon Pudding, Depression Cake. Savory concoctions for a hungry time.
Happy reading!

In the Market for 3 or 4 Wheeled Walkers?
When shopping for a 3 or 4 wheeled walker, here are keypoints to help you find the right one for you!
1) All walkers should list a user height that the walker is designed for. For example, someone that is 5'6" should look for a walker that "fits users 5'6" to 6'".
2) There is a corresponding seat height to each user height. For users with longer or shorter legs in relation to their height, look for a walker with the correct seat height. For example, if you have shorter legs, look for a shorter seat height such as 18".
3) Seat width is usually not adjustable, so make sure you find the right size to fit the width of your hips.
4) Weight Capacity of the walker, and the weight of the walker itself should be taken into consideration. For example, most walkers fold up so you can take them in your car with you, so make sure you can lift the walker if needed. You also want to ensure that the walker can handle the seated weight of the user.
5) Adjustable handle height ensures the walker will be a good fit. Good posture is important, so make sure the user is not slumping over, or not able to slightly lean on the walker for support.
6) Most walkers have 8" wheels - make sure they are not smaller than this to ensure easier travel over various terrains.

We offer a wide range of Wheeled Walkers, including Nova and Guardian walkers along with the new HybridLX Rollator Transport Chair combo!

The Golden Years
Getting older stinks. Everyone but our youth understands that.
Hair disappears only to be found growing in odd places. Joints make the sound of a popular brand of cereal, and start to ache when the weather changes. Glasses need to be purchased, or made stronger and more "versatile" with bi or tri focals. Hearing aids are needed so that larger gatherings are more enjoyable and you dont have to stand there just smiling and nodding.
If you think about it, there are so many products out there that make getting older so much easier. Little tools and gadgets that our grandparents never dreamed of having. They improve the quality of life substantially!
I love hearing about seniors getting out and about and being active and embracing their life, even if it is somewhat modified because they now have to use a walking cane for stability. They have made the choice to not sit and become more immobile!
I intend to fight my age with every gadget I can get my hands on. I want my grandchildren to have to keep up with ME! I want to hear those whispered secrets, and actually be able to see and find them in a game of hide and seek.
There is no shame in needing a little help as we age.
We at Mountain View have a wide variety of Mobility Products. I have decided when the time comes, I'm going to get me a walking cane in Blue Floral because it represents my personality and adds some style!

Wisdom of the 40 Year Old
I am 40 years old today!
I quite enjoyed my 30's, so turning 40 is something I didnt necessarily want to happen. I have always embraced my age and its been my policy to divulge my true age when asked. It is part of who I am and I should never be ashamed!
I have repeatedly been told that the 40's are awesome! So Im going with "the 40's are the new 30's". And that means the 30's are the new 20's. And the 20's are the new teenagers. Makes sense, if you think about it.
As men age, they become more "distinguished". As women age, they become "cougars". Being distinguished sounds stuffy and boring. Being a cougar sounds WAY more fun! RAWR!
So, Im sharing my wisdom of being 40 and staying young!
TOP 5 FROZEN MEALS (all entries are less than 400 calories for those of you who have a metabolism that has been thrown-into-reverse, like mine):
SmartOnes Santa Fe Style Rice - for those days when you need a creamy, cheesy, Mexican meal with a bit of kick.
Lean Cuisine Lasagne with Meat Sauce - when you might be extra hungry and in the mood for Italian, this fits the bill. Best individual frozen lasagne I have found!
Lean Cuisine Spa Series Butternut Squash Ravioli - if you like squash you will love this dish - full of veggies and great flavor!
Michelina's Lean Budget Gourmet Salisbury Steak & Potatoes - best low-calorie salisbury steak I have found and cheap too (usually about $1)! When I am a bit more hungry, I bring a bag of veggies and add to this meal and its still comes in under 400 calories!
Marie Calendar Pasta al Dente Beef Bolognese Rigatoni - has it all - tasty beef, pasta, sauce and veggies.
HONORABLE MENTION: SmartOnes Stone Fired Pizza - best taste hands down, with a crisp crust, nice sauce and tasty toppings! I prefer pepperoni.
TOP 5 FUNNY MOVIES (disclaimer: I have been told I have a quirky sense of humor, so watch at your own risk) (disclaimer, continued: pretty much ALL of these must be watched multiple times to get the full-funny-effect):
The Coneheads - starring Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin. Martians living on earth, trying to blend in and raise a family the American way. 1993
To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar - starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Lequizamo - all dressed in drag and stranded in a small Nebraska town. 1995
Mars Attacks - starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close and Annette Benning. Martians with a cruel sense of humor! 1996
Joe Dirt - starring David Spade and Dennis Miller. A nod to the 80's, so I couldnt resist! Plus the soundtrack was FUN! 2001
Patch Adams - starring Robin Williams, Daniel London and Monica Potter. A 70's medical student who treats patients illegally with humor. 1998
Monsters, Inc. - Starring John Goodman and Billy Crystal. I love animation movies for kids that ensure the parents are also entertained! 2001
HONORABLE MENTION: Toy Story and Shrek - both fulfilled the parent entertainment requisite for an animated kid movie!
You now have quick, cheap, butt-friendly dinners and movies to make you laugh - The secret to staying young!

Mother Natures Shenanigans!
We woke up with snow on the ground this morning here in the Denver Metro Area. Snow!
It wasn't much, but it was a little disheartening since so many flowers are in bloom and delicate vegitation will probably have a bit of stunted growth.
For once, the weekend is bringing warmer weather, and by warmer I mean a high of 70 degrees. Then, come Monday, we dip down into the 40's again with rain. It's almost mid-May for crying out loud!
If it weren't for the spectacular blooms this year, I think we would all be way more upset with Mother Nature's Shenanigans!
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Rental vs. Purchase
Yesterday, we had a very nice lady inquire about purchasing a knee walker/rolleraid. She said she priced rentals locally and decided to purchase, and then resell the rolleraid for a fraction of the original cost to recoup her expense. She needed the rolleraid for about 8 weeks while recovering from surgery.
When we informed her we also rented knee walkers/rolleraid, she said she found it was cheaper to purchase since rental rates of these fun little knee walkers was so high.
Little did she know that OUR rental rates were so low!
We often have customers come to us needing wheelchairs, walkers or knee walkers for temporary reasons and feel that they should just go ahead and purchase. Our suggestion is to always shop around because prices for rentals and purchases vary greatly.
For example, our knee walker/rolleraid costs $416.67 brand new. Our rental rate for this item is $85/month. So if you only need this item for a two month recovery, you can save yourself almost $250!
Transport wheelchairs start at about $150, but you can rent one from us for $50 per month!
Our rental fleet includes wheelchairs (both transport and dual axle), folding aluminum walkers, knee walker/rolleraids and tri-fold ramps.
For rental rates or more information, call us at 800-873-7121 or visit our website

Better Living Corner - Wound Care Supplies
In most homes, we all have bandaids, antibiotic ointment and maybe a roll of gauze and tape. That is the extent of the "wound care" section in the medicine cabinet.
Sunny asked: My son had a doozy of a bicycle accident. Our doctor sent us home all bandaged up, but I need more than the basic supplies. What wound care supplies are available?
We answered: Wound care has come a long way and there is a wide array of products available for wounds from burns to lacerations and major road rash.
Here is a basic rundown on Wound Care Supplies:
Adhesive Tapes come in elastic/stretchy, cloth, paper, plastic, breathable, see-through and with or without strong adhesion.
DuoDerm Dressing is a hydrocolloid/gel forming agent and is moisture retentive for high exudating wounds (leaking).
Gauze Pads & Drain Sponges are available in a wide variety of styles and types and are absorbent for different types of exudation. There literally is something for everything available these days!
Hydropolymer or Hydrogel Dressing is an "island dressing" with an adhesive border and central foam to absorb exudate.
Non-Adherent Dressings use no adhesive and the contact layer will not stick to the wound. These require some other form of retention such as tape.
Packing Strips can be impregnated with iodoform solution and are used for nasal passages, drain wicks or packing deep wounds.
Self Adherent Wrap is elastic wrap that functions as tape but only sticks to itself, not the skin.
Self Adherent Dressings are used for longer term coverage and protection, adhere to the skin and are either absorbent island style or transparent and breathable.
Of course this is just a simple breakdown of what is available! For more information or for help in finding the right wound care supplies for you, call us at 800-873-7121 or visit our website! We are happy to help you find what you need!
