Proper Care & Storage of Ostomy Supplies

Ostomy supplies are not inexpensive, to say the least.  So, it’s important to understand how to apply them properly, and equally important to know how to take care of and store supplies until use.  Proper care and storage helps make your ostomy supply expenses as economical as possible.

When you receive your ostomy supplies, especially when they are a new brand or type, be sure to read carefully the instruction sheet and guidelines included in the box.  They may include specific recommendations for that given product.  Review instructions periodically to refresh your memory, and to see if any recommendations have changed over time.

Generally speaking, all ostomy supplies should be stored in a cool, dry location.  Too much heat can melt or weaken many of the materials used in ostomy wafers/barriers, pouches or accessory items.  Avoid leaving supplies in a hot car, or in direct sunlight.

Keep supplies such as wafers/barriers and pouches in their original box.  By doing so, you save the brand name, product identification number, and the lot/date information for those specific items.  You may never need this information, but in the event you do, you will be glad you have it.  When reporting quality control problems all of the information on the box will be required.  Or, if you find yourself in a pinch and needing to buy from a new source, you are sure to get the exact product you need.

Some ostomy suppli8es do have a “shelf-life”.  Meaning, the product may have an expiration date.  If this is the case, the dates may be recorded on their containers.  If you find you have a box with an expired date, check with manufacturer, your local supplier, or an ostomy nurse for advice on usage.  To ensure you don’t end up with older, expired product, practice the FIFO method:  First In, First Out.  Place your new product behind the old product so you are sure to reach for the older product, and use it first.

While you do want to keep a stock of supplies so you are always prepared to change out your system, avoid the practice of stockpiling too much.  You want to make sure your reserve is as fresh as possible.  Of course, this depends on factors such as availability, proximity to a local supplier, or shipping issues.  Also, be sure to purchase supplies from a trusted vendor – one you know that will provide good service as well as stock or easily ship your required product supplies.  If you find yourself with a fairly uncommon product, most suppliers will stock your product for you if you become a regular customer.

Be sure to report defective supplies.  If you determine your supplies are defective in spite of proper use and storage, contact the manufacturer at their toll-free number listed on the box, to report the problem.  All major ostomy supply brands will either send a replacement or make adjustments.  Also, let your supply source know of your report to the manufacturer.  They also need to be aware of product problems, especially if they are providing product to you.

Better Living Corner: "Personal Breathalyzer"

Question:  "With the legal alcohol limit change, is there a personal breathalyzer test available?  I'd like to be able to celebrate at holiday parties safely."

Check out the AlcoHawk Digital Slim 2

It contains an electronic airflow sensor to ensure the user continues to blow through the unit. This is a vital new function because only samples of air from the deep lung are proportionate to blood alcohol content. This new innovative sensor ensures the user exhales through the mouthpiece over the 4-5 second exhale. This is an important feature for professional screening to prevent an intentional short exhale which could affect accuracy.

How Do You Give Thanks?

During November, and with Thanksgiving upon us, its time to think about all the things that make us thankful:

For family and the other special people who have joined life's journey along the way.
For good health if you have it, one of life's greatest pleasures.
For a brain that allows you to think and function.
For the seasons that remind us that life is full of change (whether we like it or not).
For a warm bed at night.
For a phone that allows us to communicate with loved ones that are far away.
For food, whether you are making it or eating it.
For access to water, one of life's most important necessities.
For music, which feeds the soul.
For little pleasures that remind us that we are human.
For the ability to help others in need.

During the holidays, not everyone has the ability to visit family, or have a family to visit.  Poor health and distance prevent many folks from gathering during the holidays as they once did.  Volunteering during the holidays doesn't have to be an ongoing commitment, or even an all-day affair.  Volunteering during the holidays will, however, make the difference in the life of someone else who needs a simple pleasure to boost their spirits.

Serve Dinner at a Homeless Shelter:  Homeless shelters need volunteers to prepare and serve meals for those without a home.  Whether or not you're handy with a frying pan, homeless shelters appreciate the extra help.  Check out The National Coalition for the Homeless, or The Salvation Army for information on where to help out. www.VolunteerMatch.com is an incredible website that can help match you to very specific areas of interest in your town or city.

Deliver a Meal:  If you have a car, consider volunteering with a local Meals on Wheels program to bring a hot dinner to those who aren't able to join family and friends.

Run a Turkey Trot:  Turkey Trots are races that often benefit local charities, planned on or around Thanksgiving.  Not only are these runs for a good cause, but they're also a way to burn calories - which means you can definitely have that second piece of pumpkin pie!  Simply type "Turkey Trot (your city, state)" into a search engine to find an event near you.  Not a runner?  Not a problem!  Most Turkey Trots offer a walking option.

Invite a Neighbor, Friend or Acquaintance:  Perhaps you learn that someone may not have a place to go for a holiday meal.  Invite them to Thanksgiving dinner with you and your family.

Take Food to Public Service Workers:  Thanksgiving is just another working day for many public service workers.  Fire Stations, Police Stations, Emergency Workers, etc., all keep the rest of us healthy and safe during the holiday.  Call ahead and ask to bring a few plates for those on duty.

Visit a Hospital:  Call in advance (or go online) and find out your local hospitals' volunteer policy.  Get yourself setup to volunteer and visit sick patients with an activity to make Thanksgiving day special.

Visit a Retirement Home:  Many elderly often spend their turkey day without their families who sometimes live far away.  Help ease their loneliness by visiting them and spreading Thanksgiving cheer.

One in Four Elderly Americans are Malnourished - Are You Malnourished?

Older Americans with varying degrees of malnutrition are found throughout the community – in their own homes, in long-term care facilities and even in hospitals.  Some reasons for senior malnutrition include loss of teeth, a hard time getting to the grocery store, and lack of money.  In fact, for many older people it’s not a question of eating well, but of eating at all.  For others, disease, medication interference and dependence on others add to inadequate nutritional intake.

For older Americans, malnutrition can lead to lost weight and strength, lessened immunity to disease, confusion and disorientation, and exacerbated frailty and debilitation. Good nutrition plays a crucial role in keeping older people healthy and functioning.

Studies have shown that older adults at nutritional risk see the doctor more frequently, and have more hospital and emergency room visits.  And when in the hospital, their stays are nearly twice as long as those of well-nourished patients, resulting in much higher hospital bills.

For senior women, it is recommended they eat between 1,600 calories a day for low activity levels, and up to 2,200 calories per day for an active lifestyle (walking 3 miles per day).  Senior men should eat between 2,000 calories a day for low activity levels, and up to 2,800 calories per day for an active lifestyle (walking 3 miles per day).  The average daily calorie consumption is 2,000 calories.

So what does 2,000 calories of food look like per day?  Here is a general breakdown:
2 ½ cups of vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, etc.
2 cups of fruit such as one banana, half cup of strawberries and half cup of orange juice
6 oz of Grain foods such as one slice of bread, roll or muffin, or 1 cup of cereal, or ½ cup of rice or pasta.
3 cups of Dairy such as low-fat milk, 1 cup of yogurt or 1 ½ oz of cheese.
5 ½ oz of Protein such as seafood, lean meat and poultry, eggs, beans, peas, nuts and seeds.
6 tsp. of oil, use mainly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated such as olive or canola oil.

At any age, it's important to feed your body a diverse amount of nutrients.  Of course you should always speak to your doctor about any food or diet restrictions they may have for any special conditions or medications that modify your food intake.

The Administration on Aging, through Titles III and VI of the Older Americans Act, administers the largest community nutrition services program for older Americans, the Elderly Nutrition Program.  This program provides nutrition services including meals, nutrition education and other services to mobile and homebound elders 60 years of age and older, with a preference to those in greatest economic and social need.

So where can seniors find assistance obtaining food?  Here are some nutrition resources for older Americans:

Congregate Meals Programs are government subsidized meal programs usually held in local community centers to provide reduced cost meals to seniors, an opportunity for socializing, and volunteer roles, which contribute to overall health and well-being of older adults.  Check with your local recreation center, church or senior center to see if they host senior meal programs in your area.

Meals on Wheels:  http://www.mowaa.org/
