The 5 stages of a nurse vacation

We thought this was cute, from our friends over at www.Scrubsmag.com:

The 5 Stages of a Nurse Vacation
Because nurses typically work three days a week, we can schedule ourselves to have extended time off without taking vacation. (We’re awesome, I know.) For example, if I work Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this week and work Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week…that leaves me with eight days off without using my vacation time.
Yes, this is quite the glorious perk of being a nurse. However, these nursey vacations, whether they are enjoyed on a sandy beach, historical landmark, mountainous peak, or on my comfy living room couch, still always contain the same five stages of grieving. Here they are, outlined below.

Stage 1: Denial
No, I am not a nurse. Do not ask me to do anything nursey. I don’t want to look at that new mole on your leg, oh close friend of mine. I don’t care that your dad’s blood pressure is 10 points less than it was last week and I don’t care if he goes to see his PCP.  I will avoid large crowds because larger crowds mean more people that could potentially need CPR.

Stage 2:  Anger
I can’t believe I wiped other people’s butts more than my own this week! I can’t believe a thin piece of latex was all that lay between my hand and feces! I hate that I didn’t pee for 13 hours on Tuesday! Why did I go into debt for school to clean up POOP!?

Stage 3:  Bargaining
Alright God, if you make it so that I never have to wipe another butt (other than my own) again, I promise to never hide in an unconscious patient’s room again. I promise I’ll never “forget” to start a bowel prep until an hour before shift change. And I definitely won’t fart and blame it on my intubated and sedated patient.

Stage 4:  Depression
Who am I kidding? This is hopeless. I’m going to have to go back to work. All of my patients are going to be detoxing, poop will be everywhere, and they’ll all be allergic to all pain medications except Dilaudid, and are nauseated and nothing will work but Phenergan. Oh, and they’re itching too so they’ll need some Benadryl to complete their cocktail. Every two hours. My life is over.

Stage 5:  Acceptance
Awwww look at that old lady getting groceries! She’s so cute and needy! She needs ME! I want to help her and walk her to her car. I hope she took her meds today. I bet she takes aspirin, Lisinopril, Colace, and Simvastatin every day. She reminds me of that patient I had last week that cried when I left for the night. Aaaahhh darnit. I cannot deny who I am. I love who I am. I am a nurse.

7 scrubs wardrobe malfunctions you can fix today

by Scrubs • April 23, 2012

It’s easy to get used to wearing the same thing to work over and over again. This approach to workwear is cheap and requires little effort. But at some point, it really is time to cast a critical eye on your scrubs wardrobe and clear out the pieces that just aren’t cutting it anymore. Here are seven items you might find in your closet that mean you’ve put off this task for too long.

1. Prints That Match Your MC Hammer Pants
Do you own scrubs tops in bright sherbet colors covered with geometric designs? Do they date back to the Reagan era? With so many trendy, modern prints to choose from today, there’s no excuse for wearing outdated designs. By the way, if you sewed shoulder pads into your scrubs tops back in the day, we can’t be friends anymore.

2. Stains That Would Shame Lady Macbeth
To stain is human; to bleach, divine. But even a heavy-duty dose of Clorox won’t get out some spots. Everyone expects nurses to get nasty stuff on their scrubs at work. What they don’t appreciate is recognizing the same stuff that spilled on your scrubs two weeks ago showing up again. Wave the not-so-white flag of surrender and let permanently stained scrubs retire with dignity.

3. Low-Riding Scrubs That Might Get You Kicked Off a Bus
Yes, “sagging” is a style. It’s just not one you want to follow at work. If you have scrubs with a missing drawstring or weakened elastic, you might find yourself accidentally falling into this bottomless pit of fashion hell. Stop hitching up or safety-pinning your pants and spring for new ones with real staying power.

4. Patch Pockets That Have Been Patched Too Often
The amount of stuff we tote around at work takes a real toll on our pockets. If the pocket itself starts coming off, that’s a quick fix. But eventually the fabric on your scrubs at the corner of the pocket gives way—leaving a little square tear. Even if you patch it, this damaged area won’t look the same again. You don’t want to be known as the Raggedy Ann nurse.

5. Some Hues You Should Lose
You bought these scrubs when chartreuse green or mustard yellow was all the rage. But the truth is that these colors look absolutely hideous on you. If these scrubs have been sitting in the back of your closet, barely worn, you can donate them. That way, you can still feel good about a purchase that went horribly wrong.

The top 10 weirdest things in nurses’ pockets!

Scrubs pockets can be a nurse’s best friend—since you’ve only got two hands, you’ve gotta put everything somewhere! But we also know those pockets can lead to a few “oops” moments once you get home and empty them! We asked our Facebook fans for the strangest thing they’ve ever found in their pocket post-shift—check out their hilarious, slightly gross and even occasionally bawdy answers (and don’t forget to check your pockets before leaving work tonight)!

The top 10 weirdest things in nurses’ pockets!

1. A patient’s set of false teeth! Wrapped in a glove! Crazy but true!!!  - Teressa B.

2. I was on a 16-hour shift and had a patient with two necrotic toes. Near the end of the second half of the shift, I changed the patient’s foot dressing. As I took the old dressing off, off came a toe! I wrapped it in a 4×4 and called the supervisor. Long story short, I got home and emptied my pockets, and what did I pull out? You guessed it…THE TOE!  - Lisa O.

3. A tooth! Never did figure out how it got there…- Cheryl S.

4. A dried-up umbilical cord that a mother wanted to keep, but left it on the table. I called her and she came all the way back to pick it up! - Susan W.

5. A very small fake penis—we had to practice putting a new kind of condom cath on it. My grandson was the one who pulled it out of my pocket…I had some explaining to do, needless to say!  - Wanda R.

6. I was helping the doctor perform a thoracentesis, and the patient started coughing when his lung expanded. We all ducked from the bits of tumor that came flying, and thought we had found all the pieces…until the end of my shift, when I reached into my breast pocket. Ugh.  - Kristi P.

7. I kept hearing a crinkling, crackling noise and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from…until I was changing out of my scrubs. I had a wrapped baby bottle nipple stuck in the middle of my bra! (I’m a maternity nurse.) LOL!  - Cyndi P.

8. A specimen cup with a stool sample in it. I was working in ED and it was very busy. I saw the order on the computer and so did another nurse. We both ended up getting a sample from the same patient, only she sent hers down to lab first. I saved mine just in case and forgot it was in my pocket when I got home. YUCK!!!  - Sheryl A.

9. Wrist restraints…you should have seen my husband’s face when I pulled THOSE out!  - Poppy H.

10. A penis implant…loooonngg story!  - Shelly Z.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever found in your pocket at the end of a long shift?

What do YOU think?
