These Aren't Your Grandma's Compression Garments!
Compression revisited. Let's take a moment to refresh or reset our thinking about compression garments, shall we?
What it is:
Compression garments push dilated vein walls back into place, enabling veins to close properly and function more efficiently. This results in increased blood flow, reducing leg swelling, pain, fatigue and risk of blood clot formation.
How and Why:

Nurses: Compression Socks Reduces Swelling During Long Shifts
Sigvaris recently sponsored a study of 31 nurses conducted by Dr. Mary Foscue, Assistant Vice President of Medical Affairs at the Sacred Heart Health System in Pensacola, Fla. The purpose of the study was to determine if graduated compression socks provide relief from tired, achy legs among nurses who work long shifts.
Every participant kept a daily diary in which they recorded the number of hours they worked, as well as a detailed log recording the amount of time they spent both on and off their feet. Each nurse also noted information about swollen ankles, small or large vein issues, and any discoloration of the skin.
Each nurse was given several pairs of over-the-counter 15-20mmHg knee-high graduated compresison socks. 84% of the participants said they noticed a symptomatic improvement in leg health. In addition to these findings, 74% of the nurses who participated in the study said they saw a decrease in the swelling of their legs after wearing compression stockings.

Compression Stockings Explained
Remember the slightly brownish-orange stockings your Grandmother used to wear? These are no longer them! Compression stockings (or compression hose, compression socks, diabetic socks, etc.) have come a very long way!
Compression Sockings help your circulatory system work like it should by pushing dilated vein walls back into place. The result is increased blood flow which, in turn, significantly reduces leg swelling, pain, fatigue and risk of blood clot formation.
Compression stockings are available in different levels of compression and the unit used to classify compression stockings is mmHg, or manometric units of pressure. These stockings are made of elastic fibers or rubber and have higher compression at the ankle, where veins are the weakest and swelling usually is worse, and gradually lower compression up the leg.
Compression stockings can be used for diseases such as Deep Vein Thrombosis, Diabetes and Venous Disorders. Medical stockings usually require a prescription from your doctor since exact compression fit is critical.
