First there was 911, a simple emergency number so you don't have to fumble through the phone book while your house burns down. Then came 411, an informational number you can call from any phone to find the nearest pizza joint or hair salon. Now, there is 2-1-1.
What is 2-1-1? It’s a 911 or 411 with a heart. Spearheaded by United Ways, it’s a resource/assistance for Americans needing help - serious help - ranging from financial assistance during a family crisis to finding adequate care for an aging parent, to searching for the highest quality child care. Its your link to essential community resources and it is currently available to about 75% of the US, with more coming on board each month.
2-1-1 is also a way for others to give back to their community. The whole point of 2-1-1 is to put resources and volunteers in touch with those that need help.
2-1-1 is the most comprehensive listing of non-profit human service agencies, with some regions having information on over 11,000 programs.
To reach a 2-1-1 near you, simply dial 2-1-1 from any phone, or visit www.211.org and go to the “2-1-1 Finder” in the lower right hand corner to find your local resource.
